We are all unique, and your small business is unique as well. Even if you can’t see the exact ways that you and your business are unique, there is only one of you. It can be easy to forget how unique everything in nature is, especially the small things, such as snowflakes, grains of sand, or individual leaves. As the days grow shorter, our trees start to become more and more vibrant in their autumn colors. Yet aspen trees are often singled out by locals, tourists, and amateur photographers alike.

We Are All Connected

In most cases, aspen trees grow in large clonal colonies. This means that each aspen grove that you see is really part of a larger underground system. So even though each and every aspen tree is an individual, its roots are interconnected with every single other tree in its grove. This underground root system of the aspen colony can live for thousands – even tens of thousands – of years. As long as the root system survives, the aspen grove will thrive, even if many of its individual trees become sick or dead. Furthermore, even if the entire aspen grove is destroyed in a fire, as long as the root system survives, the aspen grove will regrow in time.

Celebrate Your Uniqueness

If you ever find yourself lost in the muddle of life, remember this: you may be part of a large business, networking group, community, or family. Those groups are your root system. They are the ones that support you and nourish you. And while your group may support and nourish hundreds of others, each and every person in that group is unique, and each and every person in that group relies on the rest of their group for support just like you do. Groups of people cannot happen without individuals influencing each other. And just as in nature, even the smallest actions we make may greatly influence those around you. We really are all connected.
