I’ve listed my business in Google and Bing Places for business. What about other online directories?
In the previous posts in this series, we covered Google Places for Business, Bing Places for Business and Yelp. If you have successfully listed your business with these services, you will reach the majority of customers and potential customers who either search specifically for your business or within a category of businesses online.
However, if you are willing to invest more time, effort and money, there are other websites and business directories online that you can utilize as well. While these companies and services may not be as big or successful as Google or Microsoft, they still attract users in unique ways and for unique reasons and are worthy of your consideration.
Superpages
Superpages is a local business directory owned by SuperMedia LLC, a Dex Media company. This business directory was once owned by Verizon, but was spun off by that company in 2006 as Idearc Media.
One reason to list your business with Superpages is the popularity of the Superpages iPhone app. This award-winning app is popular among iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users who may opt to use this app before utilizing Google Search or another search engine, therefore utilizing the Superpages directory provides a unique opportunity to attract these mobile users to your business or organization. Listing your business or organization with Superpages is free.
DexKnows
DexKnows is also a local business directory owned by Dex Media. This business directory is very similar to Superpages and was once owned by Qwest Communications.
Although Qwest Communications was acquired by CenturyLink, Inc. in 2011, an important reason to list your business with DexKnows is the legacy association many former Qwest customers in the Mid-West and Western states may have with the brand. Many former Qwest customers may still search for and exclusively utilize a “Dex” directory online.
Yahoo! Directory
Yahoo! Directory is a unique service in many ways. It is one of the oldest directory services on the Internet – it was the first Yahoo! product and predates Google! Although the directory itself may not be as popular as it once was, many SEO experts believe that being listed in the Yahoo! Directory improves the search engine ranking of your business or organization in both Yahoo! and Google’s search engines.
The main drawback of utilizing Yahoo! Directory is the cost of submitting and maintaining a listing. The Yahoo! Directory Submit service costs $299 to submit a listing and a recurring annual fee of $299 to maintain it. These fees may make it prohibitive for a small business with a limited marketing budget to utilize this service.
Get Your Business Listed in the Online Directories
By now, I’ve shown how to claim your online listings, and the value of getting your business listed with Google Places for Business, Bing Places for Business, and Yelp. There are many other smaller online directories – but still significant in building a local online presence for your business. These are just a few of the directories that you can utilize to promote your business to your local customers.
